Wonju municipal orchestra(permanent conductor Kim Gwang Huyn) invited professor Lim Hun Jeong from Seoul National university as first honorary musical director and was founded on July, 1997. Later, with Jeong Chi Yong honorary musical director and first permanent conductor Park Young Min, they constructed high standard musical world of orchestra and set its goal to improve quality of life for Wonju citizen, and take a leap to be the best orchestra in Korea or 19 years.

As the result, the orchestra was invited to Orchestra Festival held by Seoul Arts Center for 11 years in a row, and performed at Mozart Festival and Korean international musical festival. Also, the orchestra was invited by ‘La Folle Journee Festival’ held in Ganazawa, Japan in 2011. Also, the "Full-length play of Sibelius symphony" planned for 15th anniversary of foundation was a quiet fresh shock to Korean musicians.

From Mahler and Bruckner's large formation orchestra music to small-size ensembles, the enormous repertories and high standard performance has contributed to popularization of classic as Wonju's cultural icon, and with scores of visiting concert held annually, the orchestra tries to communicate with residents and cultural neglected class who cannot easily listen to music. Also, the orchestra picks young musicians from Wonju and perform in collaboration to seek the development of local musicians.

Wonju municipal orchestra will try its best to give happiness to musical fans and people of Wonju with its fresh ideas and best performances.
