Our history says that hunting with falcons was popular in the late Goryo Dynasty period. The palace started the hunting first using trained falcons, this practice moved on to high social class, and many people became a fan of this game. As such, a public organization to domesticate and train falcons for hunting was established. The more people engaged in hunting using falcons, the more thefts of falcon were committed. Thus, people began to put a special identification tag on falcon. This identification tag was called sichimi. Sichimi has a second meaning. If someone did something but says that he or she did not do it, or if he or she already knows about something but says that he or she does not know about it, it is sichimi.

Sichimi was formed in Wonju in November 2005. Members agreed to call our poetry group ‘Sichimi’. Our members wanted to take something off and we hit it off right at that time when we were together to establish a poetry group.

We hold a monthly get-together. Members write their own poems, take them to our regular meeting, and have a poem recital by taking turns. We sometimes have discussion sessions in a get-together meeting after reading a book of choice. Since 2007, we have had ‘Talk with Writer’ event. This event is held at Pak Kyongni Literature Park twice a year in February and March, supported by Wonju City Hall and run by Sichimi. Our Talk with Writer event is all open to citizens.

We put a great deal of effort into the publication of our literati periodical. We put works of our members together and publish copies of ‘Sichimi Flies High’. We issued our first publication in 2006 and brought our 13th publication out in 2018. We distribute copies to citizens when we hold events such as ‘Talk with Writer’ and ‘Exhibition of Pressed Flower-used Illustrated Poems on Hanji’.

Before we write illustrated poems on Hanji’, we use quality Hanji grown and produced in Wonju. We write poems with Wonju Hanji and give a final touch to Hanji by applying pressed, dry flowers.

Most of our members are not a full-time poet. Most of us are just a lover of poetry. However, we like poetry and write poems. We believe doing so makes our life yet richer and we do not worry about how useful writing poems is. We just love writing and sharing them with members and citizens. We wish more and more citizens come to be with us for poetry.
