The Hoechon Jeongwol Daeboreum Festival, which had been held to restore the indigenous folk culture of the region to raise awareness of its importance and inspire pride in it in order to establish local identity and a sense of community, was combined with the dangsanje rite that had been performed to help instill peace in the community and bring good harvests, as well as various traditional folk games, to be reborn as a local festival that a wider range of people can participate in. The dangsanje rite, along with a ceremony celebrating the first full moon of the new year, consists of various rituals including a sacrificial rite to the guardian deity of the community at a shrine, aekmagi (warding off evil spirits), jisinbapgi (offering sacrifices to the earth god), daljip taeugi (burning objects in the shape of the moon) and tug of war. Participants at the festival are also invited to contribute to the conservation and succession of the local folk culture while enjoying a variety of folk games such as jwibulnori, neolttwigi, sledding, and yutjeom nori, and traditional foods with their family.
