Introduction
Yeongwonsanseong Fortress, located to the south of Chiaksan Mountain, is a stone fortress built during the Silla period. The construction year is not exactly known, but it is dated during the reign of King Munmu. Gung Ye, the founder of Taebong, a short-lived kingdom on the Korean peninsula, is known to have engaged in a battle here. This fortress, as a major local military base, was the place where General Won Chung-gap defeated the rebels from the Yuan China during the Goryeo era. It is also a place with a tragic history where the residents of Wonju fought against the Japanese army under the command of County Magistrate Kim Je-gap and numerous soldiers and residents were killed when the fortress was occupied by enemies.
